What MPD’s Condom Practice Means for the Transgender Community
The practice of using condoms as evidence that someone’s a sex worker is pretty much the most abominable, nauseating thing ever. Even beyond any feelings I have about how it’s silly that sex work is criminalized, ON WHAT PLANET DOES IT SEEM LIKE A GOOD IDEA TO MAKE IT DANGEROUS FOR SEX WORKERS TO USE PROTECTION?
Plus, groups targeted by police as “likely” sex workers — such as trans women, especially trans women of color — are affected by these policies too, and also learn that safer sex is dangerous for them. And when 27.7% of trans women are already testing positive for HIV — a majority of them sex workers and/or people of color — a practice like this is tantamount to a Reaganesque genocide.
In conclusion, fuck Cathy Lanier, and fuck the NYPD and LAPD who use the same tactics.
