Katie: Well I don’t care if being trans means my documentation’s a mess and my home state won’t even let me have a copy of my birth certificate — if our state is going to be one of those horrible states with a racist, classist, transphobic, election-fixing voter ID laws, then tomorrow I’m…

My home state is demanding voter ID. Back in 1902 Lincoln Steffens called Philadelphia “corrupt and contented.” Some things do not change.

Hey now! Don’t go blaming this on Philly — we most certainly did not vote for the Tea Party scumbag who currently runs this state; but Pennsylvania’s large enough that tend to be outvoted on this sort of thing. Which is why, rather than the culprit, Philly is, in fact, the target of this legislation. A majority of Philly residents are black, and therefore presumed to be Obama voters (it’s the urban POC vs. white rural divide that makes Pennsylvania a swing state in the first place) and with a 23% poverty rate, it’s no surprise that it’s estimated that a quarter of registered voters in the city don’t have the necessary ID — including me, so far.
