Doctor Who

Right, enough yammering about my panic attacks, let’s do a meme.

I think this meme is meant to be done over a series of days? But whatever, I’m skeptical anyone cares enough what I think about Doctor Who to read about it every day, much less that I would remember to answer one of these every day.The main point is just to out myself as a giant, horrible dork who knows really obscure things about 45 year old episodes of Doctor Who and likes episodes that nobody else does.

Anyway, meme:

Day 1 - Favorite Incarnation of the Doctor

My favorites were Patrick Troughton (two), Tom Baker (four) and Sylvester McCoy (seven). We’ll throw in sexy sexy David Tennant (ten), just so the new series doesn’t feel neglected.

Day 2 - Favorite Companion

Well, I love any exceptionally clever and/or resourceful and/or badass woman who travels with the Doctor: Barbara, Sara Kingdom, Zoe, Sarah Jane, Leela, Romana (both of them), Ace, Martha, Donna.
As to male companions, Turlough wins for being Bowie-sexy and Rory was a treat, even if he was kinda wasted.

Day 3 - Favorite Villain/Monster/Alien/Baddie of the Week

I always loved the original Cybermen from The Tenth Planet. I think I already ranted about that here a couple weeks ago.
Oh! No, actually, my favorite villain is Philip Mordo. Philip Mordo as any character; he could make those stupid farting aliens look cool. (Maybe.)

Day 4 - Favorite Character

Let’s go really obscure here: Professor Rumford from The Stones Of Blood

Day 5 - Favorite Guest Star

Um… John Cleese? I’m not sure who counts as a guest star, and most of the ones who I’m certain do are minor British celebrities I’ve never heard of. Is Philip Mordo a guest star?

Day 6 - Least Favorite Character

I always found Peri grating. I hear she’s better in the audio dramas, but I heard that about the her Doctor too, and although the audio dramas absolve Colin Baker of responsibility for the mess his era became, his character’s still not my taste, so I’m skeptical that I’d like her better there.

Day 7 - Favorite Episode

1: The first episodes of An Unearthly Child, The Daleks, The Edge Of Destruction and The Space Museum respectively. (There are a lot of 1st Doctor serials that start better than they continue.) For full serials, The Myth Makers, The Dalek Invasion Of Earth, The Tenth Planet, and the better parts of The Daleks’ Master Plan. Also, The Aztecs, although it’s kind of a yucky love letter to colonialism.

2: Power of the Daleks, Evil of the Daleks, The Mind Robber, The War Games.

4: The Ark In Space, Genesis Of The Daleks, The Deadly Assassin, The Brain Of Morbius, The Robots of Death, Horror Of Fang Rock, The Sun Makers, City of Death, Warriors’ Gate.

5: Kinda, Enlightenment, The Caves Of Androzani.

7: Remembrance Of The Daleks, The Happiness Patrol, Ghost Light, The Curse Of Fenric.

9: The End Of The World, Father’s Day, The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances.

10: The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit, School Reunion, Smith & Jones, Blink, Human Nature/The Family Of Blood, Midnight, Turn Left, The Waters Of Mars.

11:The Eleventh Hour, The Beast Below, The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang. The Impossible Astronaut/Day Of The Moon is another beginning that goes rapidly downhill from there, but I loved it when I didn’t know the answers to the mysteries it set up were all crap. The Doctor’s Wife. I only just saw The Angels Take Manhattan, but give me time to digest it and it might make the list.

(As I said, Six wasn’t my cup of tea, and Three never did much for me either — though The Green Death was quite good, and I always thought he got one of the better regeneration scenes. Eight, of course, had only one televised appearance, and it was a bad USian TV movie.)

Day 8 - Favorite Series/Season

The last season of the old series was fantastic (even Battlefield is grossly underrated, probably partially because it had terrible music).
For the new series, it was the season where Martha was a companion (not only because Martha, although partially because Martha. Fuck yeah Martha!)

Day 9 - Least Favorite Episode

I’ve not watched a lot of the notorious clunkers, but the worst ones I ever slogged through were The Dominators and Aliens of London/World War III. Resurrection of the Daleks was pretty shit too.

Day 11 - Scene/Moment that makes you cry

Though there’s lots of good companion departures to pick from, if I have to pick just one, I’ll pick Zoe & Jamie’s departure in the last episode of The War Games. Patrick Troughton plays through their fate just devastatingly.
In the new series, I’d go with Donna Noble’s ending, though the most recent episode got me all weepy too.
If I had to avoid companion departures, I’d pick the ending of The Family Of Blood where the Doctor tries to get Joan to come with him. Ouch.

Day 12 - Scene/Moment that makes you giggle

Just one? Gosh. How about the back-and-forth between Tom Baker and Julian Glover in Ep. 2 of City Of Death that starts with “Can I ask you where you got these?”

Day 13 - Favorite Era visited by The Doctor & Co.

Hmmm… how about 1963 in Remembrance Of The Daleks?

Day 14 - Fave Doctor Moment

I always loved when the seventh Doctor was on stage in The Happiness Patrol, so let’s go with that just to avoid hitting any of the obvious points. ;)

Oh! And the scene in the otherwise grossly overrated Tomb Of The Cybermen (no, seriously, it’s super racist and the plot’s a mess)where the second Doctor comforts Victoria, which is tender and sweet and one of Troughton’s finest moments.

Day 15 - Fave Rose Moment

I was never as into Rose as I think I was supposed to be. I probably could come up with one if I had to, but I haven’t got one off the top of my head.

Day 16 - Fave Martha Moment

Oh gosh, all of them during her run as a companion. (After that, they really seemed to have no idea why she was still there, which was a pity.) If there’s a single one, then whatever it was, it was probably in Smith & Jones.

Day 17 - Fave Donna Moment

Probably the moment she realizes how her time with the Doctor’s going to end, because it just cuts my heart out and I’m a terrible masochist like that.

Day 18 - Fave Amy Moment

Oh, let’s say the climax of The Beast Below.

Day 19 - Fave Jack Moment

I enjoy most any scene in which Jack flirts with the Doctor and the Doctor reciprocates.

Day 20 - Prettiest Scene

The enormous old ships sailing through space in Enlightenment.

Day 21 - Favorite Location

Space Station Nerva. I always wanted a hallway like that when I was a kid (preferably without evil bugs in it)

Day 22 - Something Silly

Day 23 - Something Epic

I have no idea what either of these questions mean.

Day 24 - Favorite Accessory of the Doctor’s

The fourth Doctor’s fabulous scarf, of course.

Day 25 - Favorite Tardis Team

Probly Doctor/Zoe/Jamie if “team” means “at least 3”

Day 27 - Scene/Moment that made you smile

The fourth Doctor near-quoting Marx in The Sun Makers, and the subsequent proletarian revolt.

(I’m not going to specifically blame that serial for me growing up to be an anti-capitalist with a penchant for eccentric hats and scarves, but I’m not going to say it’s blameless either.)

Day 29 - Favorite Music/Song

I’m just going to say “The Ballad Of The Last Chance Saloon” to irk any Cotton haters that might be reading. ;)

(OK, OK, my actual favorite musical scene is the one where The Master is wheeling the helpless Doctor around to the Scissor Sisters in Last Of The Time Lords.)

Day 30 - What you want to see in the next season

A female character whose storyline doesn’t endlessly dwell on her reproductive capacity would be lovely.

If it involved a new Doctor, acknowledging that a species that gets at least a dozen bodies and personalities each isn’t likely to be white and male every single regeneration would be nice too.

And if they really wanted to go wild and throw tradition out the window, they could even hire a female writer to do an episode or two! But I suppose that’s maybe a little out there.

(And before somebody points out that Helen Raynor wrote four episodes during the Davies era, I do know that. I also know that urine is sterile enough to drink — but if I go to a bar and it’s the only thing they have on tap, I’m still going to be disappointed.)
